HOW I WORKED

I was a design lead on a cross functional team that included a senior/lead designer (me), two front end developers, and shared backend developers. This set up allowed us to align our design goals with business goals. As this was a design driven product, designers always got the final say (as long as it was feasable) which lead to some truly great work.

One of the goals of Hubrick was to take the greatest parts of the internet, such as booking from airbnb, the social feed from instagram, films from netflix and music from spotify and wrap them in an always-connected social layer.

I was in charge of gamifying this social layer, which involved research into the key drivers behind this behavior and how to make gamification fun without being predatory. I was also tasked with creating a next-generation onboarding expereicne, which was done in conjunction with FaZe Clan, who have a larger social media following than Manchester United. To acheive this, we leveraged popularity, coming 3d cameras with footage of them hanging out, so onbarding users would feel like they were part of their crew, which was our main strategy to gain new users.

THE OUTCOME

Well this is awkward... Hubrick kinda crashed and burned. The leadership team had no vision for the product, couldn’t attract or retain users, had no path to monetisation and couldn’t create a successful go to market strategy. TL:DR - No product market fit.
